The Royal Poinciana Fiesta is the oldest running festival in South Florida, it is sponsored by the Tropical
Flowering Tree Society. This year will be the Royal Poinciana’s 80th year. David Fairchild originally
brought the Royal Poinciana to the United States. On his property in Coconut Grove is the oldest
Poinciana in the United States and South Florida. The Fiesta was designed to celebrate the bloom of the
tree.

Now the festival is used to educate people not only about the Royal Poinciana but other flowering
trees as well. There have been 77 Queens and courts in South Florida. This is an honor that is part of
South Florida history.
The Tropical Flowering Tree Society is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of tropical
flowering trees. We are a non-profit group organized to promote, propagate and preserve tropical
flowering trees. Our members include homeowners, students, nursery owners, scientists, agricultural
agents and many others, Founded in early 1988 by a handful of Miami Florida flowering tree
aficionados, the group expanded rapidly and is continuing to grow. While several thousand varieties of
tropical and sub-tropical trees exist, a mere handful of these are presently available to the consumer
and few are found in today’s urban landscape. We are working to change that!
We meet every second Monday of the month at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden at 7:30pm.
You and applicants are welcome to attend any meetings and are encouraged to attend our outreach
projects in the community.
Applications and letters of recommendation should be sent to The Tropical Flowering Tree
Society Scholarship Committee care of Florida Colors Nursery, 23740 SW 147 Ave, Homestead, Fl
